5 Questions to Answer Before You Roll Over Your 401(k)
A 401(k) rollover often feels like paperwork, something to check off after you leave a job. But the decision can affect your taxes, your investment options, and how easily you can draw income later. Before you move anything, it's worth working through these five questions.
1. Direct rollover or a check made out to you?
How the money moves matters. A direct rollover goes straight from your plan to the new account. If the plan sends you a check instead, it may withhold taxes, and you'll typically have a limited window to redeposit the full amount to avoid it being treated as a distribution. In most cases, a direct rollover is the cleaner path.
2. Do you hold company stock in the plan?
If your 401(k) includes employer stock that has grown significantly, there may be tax strategies available that disappear once the shares are rolled into an IRA. This is worth reviewing with an advisor and tax professional before you initiate anything.
3. Will you need the money before 59½?
Some 401(k) plans allow penalty-free withdrawals if you leave your employer in or after the year you turn 55. IRAs generally don't offer that same flexibility. If early retirement is on the table, the timing of your rollover can matter.
4. Does a Roth conversion fit into the picture?
A rollover is often a natural moment to look at whether converting some pre-tax savings to Roth makes sense, especially in lower-income years between retirement and Social Security. It isn't right for everyone, and it has real tax costs, which is why it should be modeled, not guessed at.
5. How does this fit your income plan?
The biggest question isn't where the money goes. It's how the account will pay you once you retire. Which account you draw from first, and when, can change your tax picture for years.
